Abundant Living.L25.Relapse Prevention

STEPPING INTO ABUNDANT LIVING - RELAPSE PREVENTION - CONTINUING OUR GROWTH & HEALING

'BLESSED/HAPPY are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake (for being and doing right), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!’
Continuing our healing and growth…
Causes of Reverting back to old patterns of behavior
Matthew  5: 13 You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltiness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.
Either of the main functions of salt, as flavor or as preservative, fits the image. The rabbis used salt as a symbol for wisdom (loses its saltiness is lit. ‘becomes foolish’). [1]
The fact that we, as believers, are to be like “salt” (5:13) communicated the prophetic function of living righteous lives and calling others to repentance. It meant having an impact for God and not being ineffectual. Salt, by its very nature, flavors and preserves everything that it comes in contact with. If it did not do these things, then it would not be salt. Salt, a valuable commodity in the dry Middle East, was used in the biblical period for barter. In fact the word “salary” comes from the Latin salarius (“salt”). A person lacking integrity might have mixed white sand with the salt and then had more for trade. But salt mixed with sand lost some of its salty quality and became useless[2]
Salt was required in all the sacrifices (Lev. 2:13), in Ezekiel’s mystical temple, Eze. 43:24[3]

Abundant Living.L24.Daily Look w/ Robbie Sedgeman

Looking in the Mirror

We are continuing to explore the principle first looked at last week:  Reserve a daily time with God for bible study, prayer and self-examination.  It is good to keep in mind why we do this.  To simply have a list of daily activities without reason or focus has some value, but it is very easy to develop a pattern of ‘doing’ which simply becomes habit or compulsion without significant underlying benefit.

Let’s review the foundational Bible verse for this current series:  “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)    We are exploring God’s principles for abundant living, for a full and satisfying life here and now, not just in heaven after we die.  And this is what we need to remember when are working this principle.  Daily bible study, prayer and self-examination leads us to grow closer to God, learn His will for our lives and to gain the power to follow His will.  It is being more fully in the presence of God and walking in His will that we gain true freedom for abundant life here and now!

Matthew 22:37-40 makes it clear that God wants us to continually grow in our relationship with Him and with others:  “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart…soul and ...mind.’  This is the first commandment.  And the second is like it:  ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”   How do you know you are following this command?  The only way to know is to reflect on your behavior, motives and the state of your heart on a daily basis.  We should all take a look in the mirror each day – the mirror of self reflection, sometimes called inventory, by which we examine our heart and actions in all areas of our lives.  Taking an honest look at ourselves each day keeps us living in reality, not denial.  It prompts us to makes amends immediately.  And it will help us determine if we lived in God’s will today and if we are willing to do so tomorrow.

Stay in Reality
James 1:23-25  says, “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the word, this one will be blessed in what he does.”  This is a call to continually be aware of the reality of our life – what we feel, think and do as well as the motives which prompt our actions.

We have been working very hard to step out of denial in certain areas of our lives.  It is a natural tendency to slip back into that denial, especially during hard times.  Taking a daily look at those areas of our lives will help us stay on course.  But we also want to continuously strive to see reality in other areas of our lives.  Staying open to what God is doing in those areas of your life and honestly evaluating yourself will enable you to walk in greater freedom.

Each of us needs to determine the strategy that works best for us.  But most likely we will have elements of all of the following self-examination time frames:

Immediate.  The best bet, whenever possible, is to handle the situation immediately.  For example, you may be convicted of an unkind word or action.  Deal with it then and there.  Don’t wait.  Make amends as soon as possible.  If you cannot deal with the entire situation then, tell Jesus you acknowledge your action and are willing to make things right, and then come back to it at a later time.  The same concept applies to a kind word or action toward someone.  Thank Jesus then and there for enabling you to carry out his command to love others.

Daily.   Either at the end of the day or the beginning of the next day, review the day’s thoughts, feelings and actions.  Take note of what you need to change.  But also take note of your accomplishments and the good that you did.  I have a tendency to remember the bad more than the good.  Make a point to acknowledge the good you did that day – there will be at least one thing each day!

Weekly/Bi-Weekly.  Take time one day a week to evaluate the past week and plan for the next one.  Acknowledge and deal with any actions that you were not able to address immediately or in your daily examination.  Determine if you are still on course to accomplish the goals you set.  If you have drifted off-course, there is still plenty of time to get back on track.  The advantage of diligently reviewing your progress in this short time frame is that you will never get too far off course.

Monthly/Quarterly.  Use this time period to conduct a more in-depth review of your goals, your progress and your behavior.  Perhaps you will adjust a goal or develop a plan to tackle a hurt, habit or behavior that you now recognize is hindering a full life.  This is also a great time to look at your growth and the positive change that has occurred in your life.  This is an opportunity to take a mini-retreat.  Go someplace with no interruptions - just you and God.  Find a place free of distractions so that you can more clearly hear His small, still voice.

The main point here is to not stop.  It would be great if we could immediately change our behavior or character and not think about it again.  But this is an ongoing process.  Like being on an escalator, if you are not moving forward, you are moving backward.  We need immediate, daily and periodic ‘looks in the mirror’ to make sure we are moving forward.  Mark 14:38 tell us to “Watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation.  The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”  Taking a good, continual look in the mirror helps us resist temptation as it arises.

What to Examine?
When we studied inventories, we discussed many different types.  They all apply to this principle as well.  But, take heart!  Daily inventory is not going to be as in-depth as inventory of specific areas of your life.  It is going to focus on the feelings, actions, thoughts and attitudes of the day.  Depending on your activities of the day, it can cover a multitude of relationships:  God, family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and strangers.  It can also cover spiritual, physical, mental and emotional states.

Focus on the events of the day.  You can, however, use your more comprehensive inventory as a guide.  Keep in mind those areas that you identified as needing work.  Also keep in mind those areas where you are already acting rightly and justly.  Most likely, those areas will come up frequently.  After all, our lives are much more, and much less, than our circumstances.  Bad attitudes, for instance, will appear in almost all of your circumstances, not just some.

Thanksgiving
Though we are self-examining, it does not mean that God is left out!  We are, of course, using His Word as our guide, but we need to acknowledge him in all we discover.  For all the positive change – thank Him.  For difficulties and struggles – thank Him that He will never leave your side.  For temptations and temporary defeats – request and then thank Him for His forgiveness.  We will explore gratitude more fully in the coming weeks, but for now, practice gratitude in all your ways.

Pay Attention!
Consistent self-examination helps us pay attention to ourselves.  This is especially helpful for those struggling with co-dependency.  If you tend to look out for others and always put yourself last, this will help you put some focus back on yourself.  Are there struggles you seem to consistently encounter, continual negative feelings or harmful behaviors?  We need to spend some time focusing on ourselves so that we can identify those areas that hinder us.  As we heal from those hurts, habits and hang-ups, we then become free to truly love and help those around us.

It is also very important to see patterns of goodness, kindness and love in yourself.  We all have them and you do, too.  Be sure to track the acts of selflessness you perform and the attitudes of respect and honor that you give to others.

Stretch!
Regular self-examination will help us continue to grow into the best we can be.  The goal is not just to overcome a particular behavior and then forget about it.  Even ‘right’ behaviors can become ritualistic, with all the passion and zeal for Jesus gone.  Abundant living is not just maintaining a certain behavior and then doing the ‘tiptoe’ to make sure we don’t awaken the beast again!  It is about conquering – victory!   It is about facing with boldness every situation that comes our way and courageously looking inside as well.

This principle can help us attain real and lasting change.   We will move from a reactive mode a proactive mode, continuously allowing God to refine us.

In John 8:31-32, Jesus says, ‘If you hold onto my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’   As we follow God’s principles of self-evaluation and correction, we are disciples, followers of Jesus.  His ways, which are truth, also reveal truth to us and work truth into our lives.   Then we are set free for abundant life.  Start that life today by taking a look inside and walking into His freedom.

Group Work
  1. Do you address issues and celebrate victories immediately?  If yes, how has this benefited you?  If no, how has this harmed you?
  2. Discuss the other time frames of self-examination and their benefits:  (1) daily (2) weekly and bi-weekly and (3) monthly or quarterly.
  3. Share a behavior or attitude that you need to start examining more regularly or that you currently do examine regularly.
  4. What changes do you plan to implement as a result of this talk and discussion time?

Sermon at Ekklesia 6/23.. Got any grapes? Jesus' Lessons from a duck & a fish! Matthew 6:15-24

Got Any Grapes?  Jesus’ lessons from a duck & a fish

Listen to audio for more in depth teaching and illustrations, however, audio only includes first half of the sermon

Matthew 6: 25-34:  “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

how we try to control.. take matters into our own hands…

Got any grapes? What’s the point? How many times do we worry and through our worry and anxiety we come up with a plan of action to take care of our needs..  How many times do we go to the lemonade stand wanting/ needing grapes?  What about the guy at the stand? Hmmm.. did you notice his responses/ facial expressions?
1 – offered what he had but.. that wasn’t acceptable  2 – next couple of times there was greater frustration – anger  3 – finally there was even a threat – you come back here there will be hurt inflicted – very frustrated now… and so.. the duck comes back and creates humor/ laughter which then leads to the man taking him to a store that actually had grapes.. only to find that he wanted what he had to begin with.. what?
Much of our worry stems from wanting the wrongs things or… we want and need the right things and we go to the wrong place or person to get it! We must go to the source.. the ‘grape maker’ first! He will then direct us where to go to get the grapes. He won’t send us to a lemonade stand..  Sometimes God meets our needs supernaturally.. and other times, especially the practical needs of life, He will direct us to other resources, people, etc. Where we miss it .. is not going to Him FIRST so He can truly fulfill what Jesus is telling us here.
Think about what your tendency is – call someone on the phone, send a text, get on line and start doing research – what do you do?
I had a situation pretty recent where I could have went for the lemonade stand and thankfully, I chose not to. I was feeling all alone in a situation..  I felt like the couple of people I was in conflict with were really mis-understanding me and I was feeling very alone in it.  I tried going for a bike ride to let off some steam and clear my head.. and it started to rain. So I rode back.. got in my car and went for a drive – love doing that with God. However, my immediate desire was to get out my cell phone and dump all that was going on to someone who could be in agreement with me and affirm me. Not that that is a bad thing to do but… I didn’t talk to God about it first. So… I made the decision to let my tears out and talk to my perfect parent telling Him all about the situations and how alone I felt.  Anyone else out there feel alone in your frustrations? Yeah.. even tho we know God is always with us.. sometimes we just need to be reminded eh?
I love music especially music that helps me communicate with God…  as if on cue – no coincidence – I turned on the radio and a song I had never really paid attention to before came on – K-Love – a fairly new song by Kutless (Carry me to the cross). God spoke to me thru it  - the words were many that I had already expressed to Him and then He gave me His loving response in the same song – love that about God – don’t you?  He speaks to us in a way that will reach out heart – maybe for you it’s in His word, in creation, in the silence, listening to a good teaching on the radio…etc.
No need to go to the lemonade stand.. I went to the one who had the grapes. Of course, depending on our needs – God could direct completely different in another scenario that may come my way… I just have to be sure to go to Him FIRST – you do too.  God wants to meet our needs.. He really doesn’t want us to worry and live in anxiety and fear.
Much of our anxiety and worry comes from ignorance.  If we are ignorant of who God really is.. How can we trust Him?  It’s just like a person who doesn’t understand how a plane works – they can’t imagine one being able to fly through the air… or someone who has a fear of snakes…every snake that crosses their path in the woods – even a gardener snake – they fear for their life. People who know aerodynamics..  are no longer in fear of flying perhaps because they know how it works.. or .. they don’t fear a gardener snake if they have studied snakes because they are not poisonous… And God.. hmmm. A person who has not studied or spent time building an intimate relationship and ‘knowing’ God …may be in ignorance of  what He is really like  -- not ‘knowing’ and understanding with depth that His is able… He is trustworthy, He hears, He sees, He knows what we need....… so….. Why can we go to Him first and know that our need will be met and we will find peace?  Because….
God is perfect – He has perfect character & integrity…... Matthew 7:7-11  “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Back to Matt 6 -- will He not much more clothe you/ feed you/ take care of your emotional needs/ relational upsets ? — Oh you of little faith?

Oh you of little faith… faith = Definition of FAITH

a : allegiance to duty or a person : loyalty
belief and trust in and loyalty to God
firm belief in something for which there is no proof
something that is believed especially with strong conviction

difference between faith & trust…   trust is complete faith – trust makes it personal.. what are you doing with your faith?

trust = definition of TRUST

assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something
dependence on something future or contingent : hope

What or who are you trusting in? Maybe it is your own intellect…  We think we are prophets.. we can foretell the future.. we have every scenario played out in our head and we know that one of them is the one that is going to happen… then.. we develop a response to it..  hmmm.. I heard once that 80% of what we worry and fret about never happens.  How that was researched I don’t know.. but.. I think there is accuracy in that percentage… why are we wasting such precious time!!! We will never reason ourselves out of fear and worry…. so.. instead of trying to figure out & predict the future.. what do we need to do?

Back to Matt 6.. moving on to vs 33
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own
His Kingdom come.. His will be done – the Disciple’s prayer
His Kingdom – His will.. His rule.. His Lordship.. His control…
His righteousness…
Definition of RIGHTEOUS
acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt .. WHY THIS?  I believe it has a lot to do with having a free/ clear conscience.. If we have a clear conscience before God.. we don’t have much worry or anxiety in that area .. now do we?

How do we stop the worry/ the anxiety? – seek His kingdom, seek His righteousness.. and… learn to live one day at a time?  do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself…..   What is God telling us --- LET GO!!!

Nemo video clip:
http://www.goodsearch.com/search-web?utf8=%E2%9C%93&keywords=nemo+video+let+go

Inside the Whale – kinda like Jonah who was swallowed up for disobedience.. I guess in a way….. we are living in disobedience when we worry and have anxiety.. that’s not to beat anybody up.. we are all spiritual beings having a human experience here in this life so.. God knows and expects us to have these emotions and even sometimes debilitating issues.. He is not surprised by them at all. However, He does not want us to get stuck there..
He wants us to be able to trust Him more every day and have more freedom and peace every day while we try to navigate through life.
So… do you speak whale?  Are you hearing His voice? Do you understand what He is telling you to do?

Today is the day….
Stop worrying… Start trusting…
 Stop guessing … Start listening….
Stop analyzing  .. Start seeking (HIM)…
Stop holding on…  Start letting go!

Abundant Living.L23.Crossroads

STEPPING INTO ABUNDANT LIVING
MATTHEW 5:3–12 Beatitudes

'BLESSED/HAPPY are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake (for being and doing right), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!
'BLESSED/HAPPY are you when people revile you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things against you falsely on My account.  12Be glad and supremely joyful, for your reward in heaven is great

For BEING AND DOING RIGHT!

Principle:  Reserve a daily time with God for self-examination, Bible reading, and prayer in order to Know God and His will for my life and to gain the power to follow His will.

This week…   the how to’s during that time of learning how to ‘be and do’ right..   We will discuss the ‘crossroads’ of our journey..
Crossroads -
A crisis situation or point in time when a critical decision must be made
A point where a choice must be made;

It is not easy to be a dedicated Christian. Our society is not a friend to God nor to God’s people. Whether we like it or not, there is conflict between us and the world. Why? Because we SHOULD BE different from the world and we have different attitudes. If you are not having conflict or a struggle in your mind or relationships – you must ask yourself a few questions…   Perhaps you are just like those in the world.. if people don’t see a distinct difference in you, there is a problem..   Our attitudes, values, beliefs, actions – basically our world view should be different!!!  If you are not being persecuted… if you are not being attacked by Satan – the enemy of our growth, healing, recovery… you are not pursuing God.. pursuing change/righteousness (right-living) ENOUGH!!!
Further down in Matthew C5 --  Jesus says:  14You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a peck measure, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.
16Let your light so shine before men that they may see your [z]moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and [aa]recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.

If you are going to be light.. … then every single day you will see and be aware of opportunities to choose right… ‘crossroads’…
Deut 30:19This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.

Choose life.  Sometimes .. we have to get rid of distorted thinking before we can choose rightly… maybe some of these 15 styles of distorted thinking will resonate with you..

Listen to audio for list…

If any of them do… it’s time to go before the Lord and ask for some mind renewal… then.. we can act ‘rightly’.

I want to use Psalm 112 as a type of personal inventory tonight.. this will help you see some of the choices we have and how we receive God’s blessing..

Psalm 112

 1[a] Praise the LORD. [b]
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
who finds great delight in his commands.

 2 His children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed
.

3 Wealth and riches are in his house,
       and his righteousness endures forever.

4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. [c]

5 Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely,
who conducts his affairs with justice.

 6 Surely he will never be shaken;
a righteous man will be remembered forever.

 7 He will have no fear of bad news;
his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

 8 His heart is secure, he will have no fear;
in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.

9 He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor,
       his righteousness endures forever;
his horn [d] will be lifted high in honor.

Conditions of blessing:
1.   have a ‘holy awe’ of God
2.   delight in His word
3.   give to others – don’t be selfish or self absorbed
4.   have a steadfast, secure heart
Personal characteristics we should be developing:
1.   be gracious – thankful
2.   be full of compassion (not my gift example)- no excuses
3.   be righteous – righteousness if having the desire to emulate God’s standard of living.. stay in HIS boundaries.. ask yourself “Is what I’m doing bringing me closer to God”  “Is what I am doing, something that Jesus would do?”
His Promises:
1.   Give us light in the darkness
2.   He will exalt us with honor
3.   He will bless our children
4.   He will provide for us

Bottom line…  God truly wants to bless us!! Daily we will be given crossroads…  opportunities to choose right.. to choose life over death…  to choose right living that honors God…   What will you choose?

Matthew 5

1SEEING THE crowds, He went up on the mountain; and when He was seated, His disciples came to Him.
2Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
3Blessed (happy, [a]to be envied, and [b]spiritually prosperous--[c]with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the poor in spirit (the humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!
4Blessed and enviably happy [with a [d]happiness produced by the experience of God's favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His matchless grace] are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted!(A)
5Blessed (happy, blithesome, joyous, [e]spiritually prosperous--[f]with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the meek (the mild, patient, long-suffering), for they shall inherit the earth!(B)
6Blessed and fortunate and happy and [g]spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God [h]enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be [i]completely satisfied!(C)
7Blessed (happy, [j]to be envied, and [k]spiritually prosperous--[l]with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy!
8Blessed (happy, [m]enviably fortunate, and [n]spiritually prosperous--possessing the [o]happiness produced by the experience of God's favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His grace, regardless of their outward conditions) are the pure in heart, for they shall see God!(D)
9Blessed (enjoying [p]enviable happiness, [q]spiritually prosperous--[r]with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the makers and [s]maintainers of peace, for they shall be called the sons of God!
10Blessed and happy and [t]enviably fortunate and [u]spiritually prosperous [v](in the state in which the born-again child of God enjoys and finds satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of his outward conditions) are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake (for being and doing right), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!
11Blessed (happy, [w]to be envied, and [x]spiritually prosperous--[y]with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of your outward conditions) are you when people revile you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things against you falsely on My account.
12Be glad and supremely joyful, for your reward in heaven is great (strong and intense), for in this same way people persecuted the prophets who were before you. [II Chron. 36:16.]
13You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste (its strength, its quality), how can its saltness be restored? It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men.
14You are the light of the world.
17Do not think that I have come to do away with or [ab]undo the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to do away with or undo but to complete and fulfill them.
18For truly I tell you, until the sky and earth pass away and perish, not one smallest letter nor one little hook [identifying certain Hebrew letters] will pass from the Law until all things [it foreshadows] are accomplished.
19Whoever then breaks or does away with or relaxes one of the least [important] of these commandments and teaches men so shall be called least [important] in the kingdom of heaven, but he who practices them and teaches others to do so shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20For I tell you, unless your righteousness (your uprightness and your right standing with God) is more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
